\n | \n The Chaos of Presidents' Day:\n | \n
Today we celebrate... something. Is it George Washington’s birthday? All presidents? A random Monday in February with a fantastic mattress sale? Honestly, it’s hard to tell, and that’s part of the fun—or tragedy—of Presidents' Day. What began as a stately tribute to America’s first president has morphed into a confusing, three-day weekend free-for-all, because apparently nothing says \"thank you for leading a revolution\" quite like discounted kitchen appliances.
\n\n | \n George Washington, a man who probably wouldn’t have cared for birthday candles or balloons, didn’t exactly ask for this. His birthday, originally February 22 (or February 11, depending on which calendar you’re using—because why not throw time travel into the mix), was once an occasion for actual reflection on leadership and sacrifice. People read his Farewell Address, attended parades, and admired his wooden teeth (spoiler alert—they weren’t even wooden). But then Congress got involved in 1968 with the Uniform Monday Holiday Act. This little piece of bureaucratic brilliance shuffled federal holidays around to create neat three-day weekends, because, of course, who cares about historical accuracy when there’s a long weekend to be had? Thus, Washington’s Birthday was pushed to the third Monday in February... forever detached from February 22, like a poorly written love story. \nAnd the name? Presidents' Day? Here’s the twist—it’s not even the official name. Federally, it’s still Washington’s Birthday. But thanks to a swirl of ’80s marketing genius, retailers latched onto \"Presidents' Day\" to honor Abraham Lincoln (and boost sales). Voilà! Confusion reigned supreme, and George lost top billing to all presidents—and kitchen renovations. \nSo here we are, celebrating a holiday that no one can quite define, on a date that doesn’t match the event it’s meant to commemorate, with a name that’s technically incorrect. At least there are discounts, right? \n
